Avination grid survey 2011-11-05

Avination regions are run on 54 servers at Server4You, who offers servers with either the low end processor AMD Athlon™ II X4 605e (4x2.3 GHz, performance 2660 CPU marks) or the medium range processor Intel© Xeon© X3440 (4x2.53 GHz, performance 5290 CPU marks). The servers are loaded with between 1 and 16 regions per quadcore host, which can be compared with e.g. Second Life, which runs at most 4 full regions per quadcore processor. Performance isn't affected by the number of regions per core alone, but there is a bigger risk of poor performance on a processor with many regions compared to one with few regions. An indication of this is that Avination choses to keep high profile regions, like their Welcome regions, on servers loaded with only up to 4 regions. The wide and uneven spread of load can also explain why some customers see severe performance problems, while others see none at their regions.

2.3% of the regions are hosted on servers with a load of 8 regions or below, while 61.3% of the regions are hosted on servers with a load of 13 regions or above. Compared to the previous weeks, it appears attempts to reduce load on the most heavily loaded servers have reverted, owing to the drop from 82 to 54 servers. Although it isn't possible to find regions via the map interface outside of the area (0,0)-(2048,2048), a number of regions (36 of 683 this survey) are not found inside this area. Since the number of regions in the area fits the total number of region slots on Avination servers, the excess 36 regions are probably not part of Avination, but added to the count anyway. 136 of the found regions are owned by Avination management, team and known alts of them.
The area (950,998)-(1003,1050) is locked for ordinary region ordering, and is therefore considered special, hence the separate statistics for this area.
A few land owners appear to have been shuffling their regions around since the last survey, resulting in them being registered as both gone and new, since it's hard to determine if a region has just been moved, renamed, changed owners, or really been deleted and a new one with the same name appeared.
